Conducting multiple experiments to conjugate a well-drafted Bard Google-AI Hands-on Impressions proved tougher than earlier imagined. The hopes and anticipations initially were: Bard would challenge or dethrone the current AI king ChatGPT. But did it? Here is the list of things that I found interesting in the entire assessment journey.

Summary of the Google ‘Bard’ Terms & Privacy document:

  1. Data Collection: Google collects your Bard conversations, related product usage information, general location, and feedback. This data is used to improve Google products and services, including machine-learning technologies.
  2. Data Storage: By default, Google stores this information with your Google Account for up to 18 months. You have the option to change the auto-delete settings to 3 or 36 months. Bard conversations may be reviewed and processed by human reviewers, but steps are taken to protect privacy by disconnecting conversations from your Google Account.
  3. Privacy Concerns: To maintain privacy, it is advised not to include personally identifiable information or sensitive data in Bard conversations. Human-reviewed Bard conversations are stored separately from your Google Account and retained for up to three years.
  4. Bard’s Functionality: Bard uses your past conversations and location to provide answers. However, it is important to note that Bard is an experimental technology and may occasionally provide inaccurate or inappropriate information that does not represent Google’s views.
  5. Professional Advice Disclaimer: Bard’s responses should not be relied upon as medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice. It is important to seek appropriate professional guidance for such matters.
  6. Feedback: User feedback is encouraged to help improve Bard’s performance.
  7. Terms of Service: Your use of Bard is subject to both the Google Terms of Service and the Generative AI Additional Terms of Service.

Google ‘Bard’ Standout points and concerns to note:

  • Data Collection and Storage: Google collects and stores your Bard conversations, product usage data, and location information. Although efforts are made to protect privacy, it’s important to consider the sensitivity of the information shared.
  • Human Reviewers: Human reviewers may access and process your Bard conversations. While privacy measures are taken, there is still a potential for privacy implications.
  • Retention Period: Bard conversations reviewed by human reviewers are retained for up to three years, even if you delete your Bard activity. This may raise concerns about the long-term storage of personal data.
  • Accuracy and Appropriateness: As an experimental technology, Bard may occasionally provide incorrect or inappropriate information. Users should be cautious when relying solely on Bard’s responses.
  • Professional Advice: Bard’s responses should not be considered professional advice. Users should consult appropriate professionals for matters requiring expertise.
  • Terms of Service: It is important to review and understand the Google Terms of Service and the Generative AI Additional Terms of Service, as they govern your use of Bard.

Testing Experience:

  • Google Bard and Google Assistant are both large language models with a lot of information.
  • Google Bard is not a commercial product yet, so it lacks some capabilities of Google Assistant, such as making phone calls or sending text messages.
  • Google Bard is an AI-powered chatbot designed to answer questions and provide assistance.
  • Google Bard’s advantage lies in its integration with Google Search, allowing it to access a vast amount of information.

Comparing Google Bard to ChatGPT

  • Google Bard’s language model is larger than ChatGPT.
  • Google Bard was trained using a more recent dataset.
  • Google Bard can utilize Google Search, which ChatGPT cannot.
  • Google Bard considers itself the better chatbot, but acknowledges that ChatGPT may be a better choice for some users.

Using Google Bard to compare smartphones

  • Google Bard provided a review of the Nothing Phone 1, highlighting its features but missing out on mentioning its unique Glyph lighting system.
  • Google Bard compared the Nothing Phone 1 to the Motorola Edge 2022, providing accurate spec comparison and listed prices in INR instead of USD. Don’t think my US friends would be happy to convert on the fly!
  • AI didn’t recommend when I asked on which phone would be better choice for mid-ranger buy.

Using Google Bard for coding

  • Atrocious start to coding and resolving errors.
  • I gave a problem statement to design a website using react and also steps to install react on linux based machine.
  • Not only did Bard fall short but to undo the steps I had to call in the cavalry ‘ChatGPT’ to rescue.
  • It could not fix any of the runtime issues that visual code encountered.
  • Miles to go before I can recommend Bard as programming language co-pilot.

Conclusion on Bard Google-AI Hands-on Impressions

  • While Google Bard is helpful, it is not as advanced or integrated as Google Assistant.
  • I plan to continue using and testing Google Bard to keep track of improvements and much needed integration with Google products.
